English Senior Nat 5
There is an opportunity for S5 and S6 pupils who have achieved National 4 English to go on to study English at National 5 in S5 and/or S6.
This course is made up of two mandatory units which provide learners with the opportunity to develop their listening and talking, reading and writing skills in order to understand and use language effectively.
English: Analysis and Evaluation
The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop listening and reading skills in familiar contexts. Learners develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate detailed language, through the study of a range of texts in language, literature and media contexts. At least one Scottish text should be studied – from a list prescribed by the SQA.
English: Creation and Production
The purpose of this Unit is to provide learners with the opportunity to develop talking and writing skills in familiar contexts. Learners develop the skills needed to create and produce detailed language in both written and oral form.
To gain a course award at National 5, the learner must pass both units as well as the course assessment.
Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation: external examination
(30% of the overall award)
Critical Essay: external examination (20% of the overall award)
Scottish Set Text: external examination (20% of the overall award)
Portfolio of Writing: Externally Assessed
The marks gained from this submission will make up 30% of the overall award.
Pupils will submit two redrafted pieces of writing, created under supervised conditions, according to SQA guidelines.
Pupils who successfully pass all units and the external exam can progress to Higher English, or may wish to develop functional Literacy skills in Scottish Studies or Media at National 5.
Scottish Studies is recommended for learners who have achieved National 4 English who wish to continue developing their functional literacy skills.
