Chemistry National 4/5

Course Outline – National 4/5 in S4

The National 4/5 Chemistry course aims to make pupils aware of the chemical basis of the world around them - for example, our food, clothes and the environment are all the results of chemistry in action.
The National 4/5 course aims to show the contribution of chemistry to the quality of everyday life - searching for better fuels and producing plastics and other useful materials. Concern about the environment features strongly.

In common with the other sciences the course aims to develop the skills necessary to find solutions to problems. The essence of scientific enquiry is problem solving. Practical work has an essential place in the course, acting as a stimulus to interest and enjoyment as well as illustrating the course material.
The course provides a good basis for further study or for work.

The Course consists of 3 main topics:

-  Chemical Changes and Structure – includes the Structure of the Atom and Rates of Reaction. – The majority of this section is covered by the level 4/National 4/National 5 work covered in S3.
-   Nature’s Chemistry – includes the different chemicals in crude oil and how they react to give us many useful products. These products include fuels and plastics.
-   Chemistry in Society – includes metals, the latest technology in plastics, and other new materials.

Entry Requirements

In order to study National 4/5 chemistry, students should have completed S3 chemistry to a suitable level.

Additional Information

Much of the teaching is done through practical work and scientific enquiry.
Practical and thinking skills will continually be developed and assessed throughout the course. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed on a continuous basis using tests after every topic.
As always, studying chemistry requires a great deal of motivation and commitment from young people. Regular homework and also memorising the key points after every lesson will be an ongoing feature of the course.
The decision as to whether to present a pupil at National 4 or National 5 level will be made after discussion with parents after the prelim.
Studying chemistry at National 5 level should lead on to study of Higher Chemistry. Studying Chemistry at National 4 level should lead on to National 5 Chemistry in S5.
